Summer is fast approaching and after months of layering to keep warm, it’s finally time for us to embrace t-shirts, shorts and sandals again, favourites among children. As most parents know children grow so quickly so this is normally the time of the year we head to the stores in search of some new summer clothes which are both practical and fun.

When it comes to children clothes there are far fewer rules and you can embrace all the colours and prints that us parents couldn't really get away with. What is even better is there are tonnes of fantastic British clothing companies that make unique and high-quality kids clothes which you can support a homegrown business without the compromise - a win-win for everyone. Here are some of our favourites.

Tobias and the Bear

Started by two mums who found a gap in the market when it came to comfy but cool clothes for newborns to 5yr olds. Their nature inspired printed leggings are particularly popular and you can even get a few designs in adult sizes, everything is unisex and really will appeal to the design focused mamas out there. They have also expanded to bedding and their products are 100% made in the UK making it an ethically produced option.

Muddy Puddles is all about stylish waterproof clothing, perfect for jumping in muddy puddles!

Muddy Puddles

As we all know even in the warmer months you need to be prepared for those summer showers especially if you are planning to camping, or to go to a festival so these award winning waterproof clothing really will come in handy. Started when a farmer's children who loved getting muddy inspired an all-in-one waterproof suit more than 20yrs ago. The spring summer collection has colourful lightweight waterproof jackets and wellies and this British brand is also committed to giving back by supporting local charity Urban Wild Places which work to get inner city children outdoors.

Catapult Clothing is all about bright colours and distinctive designs for kidswear

Catapult Clothing

Launched in 2014 by two London mums who simply wanted well-designed t-shirts with bright colours and distinctive designs. Initially a brand that catered more towards boys, their limited edition t-shirts and hoodies are now unisex for ages 5-16 (with some adult designs) and their own kids are involved in the design stage making them very appealing for children. They have also expanded to hats, beanies and limited edition sleepover bag.

Colourful and hard-wearing, Tootsa clothing for kids is perfect for all kinds of adventures

Tootsa MacGinty

An award-winning unisex British brand just for kids, the clothes are colourful, hardwearing and are designed so kids can run, jump and enjoy everything that childhood has to offer but in stylish threads of course. Set up by a former senior designer of international street wear labels this mother aimed to create an alternative to the traditional boy-girl clothing divide and has totally succeeded. Tootsa has also collaborated with & contributed profits towards the charity Refuge - for women and children against domestic violence and Surfers Against Sewage.

Tootsa MacGinty is all about stylish threads for adventurous kids

Indikidual

This British unisex clothing brand for children 3 months to 10yrs has a serious dose of Scandinavian influence and is vibrant and fun and will certainly capture the hearts of the cool gang. The clothes are durable and comfortable with flare and colour rarely seen in other brands and they also produce all their clothes with organic cotton. Their bright yellow banana print backpack and sushi covered printed leggings are certainly going to be a hit with the kids.

All of these brands are available online with most offering low postage fees and free returns. It really has never been easier to support local brands without even leaving your lounge and offering your children a fun and unique alternative this summer to the over saturated high street.
