Attraction Information
Bishops Lydeard Mill has been painstakingly restored over a number of years and now provides a great historical attraction to visit with the kids. The chance to see a little piece of preserved history in a Mill and attached Mill House that are Grade 2 listed, and have been cited as places of historical interest!
Visit a working watermill with a wheel that weighs over 2 tonnes, yet can be turned using just 2 fingers at the Mill! You can see a number of trades on display in the saddler's, and cooper's shops, plus there is a Victorian kitchen to explore, and a thatching display.
There is a preserved wheelwright's shop that has been transported from Devon in exactly the same state it was in when the owner shut up shop for the last time! The Blacksmith's forge really has an atmosphere of bygone times, with authentic smells, and a glowing furnace, just mind your fingers when the hammer falls!
The interpretations of the miller's equipment and its use are clear and simple to follow, and there are touch screens providing detailed information. There are also detailed, handcrafted models of various carriages and wagons, fun interactive displays, a newly created Transport museum, plus 2 scenic displays. There is also a small entertainment area for the kids, while the adults ‘sup tea'.
The Tea Room offers special concessionary prices for anyone who has purchased a ticket for either the Mill (and garden) or just for the garden. This is quite a bargain, as Garden tickets include seeing the 2 small museums, several outdoor displays, the shepherds hut, the gypsy caravan, the water wheel and a pretty garden!
