Castle History

The castle dates back to the 11th century when it was built by the Normans as a strategic fortress to guard against invasions from the north! The castle has been home to the powerful Manners family for over 850 years and is currently the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland.

Belvoir Castle's architecture is a true masterpiece, with its impressive sandstone exterior and intricate stonework. The castle's main entrance is a grand archway, leading to a courtyard surrounded by high walls, which were once used as a defence against attackers. The castle's impressive keep, or central tower, is a highlight of the castle and offers visitors extraordinary views of the surrounding countryside!


About Belvoir Castle

Not only is the caslte pretty impressive from the outside, but the interior is even more spectacular! From its grand halls and opulent rooms adorned with priceless artwork, to antique furnishings, and rich fabrics. Discover the Wellington Room and its 18th century Chinese wallpaper

You can explore the castle's State Rooms, which have been beautifully restored and are open to the public! These include the magnificent Drawing Room, the ornate Dining Room, and the Grand Ballroom, which was used to entertain guests in the past. A truly romantic fairy-tale feel to the castle.

One of the most unique features of Belvoir Castle is the impressive Duke's Room. It is a beautiful library that houses over 16,000 books, as well as a collection of manuscripts and maps. The room is decorated with ornate plasterwork, and a magnificent fireplace, making it a must-see for history buffs and literature enthusiasts!


Belvoir Gardens 

Did you know that the Belvoir Estate has over 1,600 acres of stunning woodland? It's home to many native and exotic species of trees that are actually many centuries old.

The castle's lush formal gardens are another major draw for visitors. The gardens have been carefully maintained for centuries and feature a wide variety of plants and flowers, including roses, daffodils, and bluebells. The roses were actually planted by Emma Manners, who is the Duchess of Rutland!


Did you know that Harold Peto's lost plans for the glorious garden were recently discovered? It shows that the Rose Garden is shaped like a boat! His classic hallmark.


The castle's famous terrace garden and historic beauty are located on the south side of the castle. offers panoramic views of the estate's rolling hills and woodlands. Not forgetting the excellent Japanese Woodland which is full of Japanese and Chinese flora. From hydrangeas, azaleas, snake-bark and Japanese maples - to name a few!


Adventure Playground

A brand new adventure playground is calling out to all kiddies! Spanning 4 acres, featuring a safe space for all your imaginations to come to life! 

You'll find an impressive giant timber castle, a ship and even towers.


It's the perfect space for your kids to explore and have fun.


Seasonal Activities

Belvoir Castle also offers a range of activities for visitors. As well as a variety of events and exhibitions, like the Belvoir fireworks! In the winter, visitors can explore the castle's Christmas decorations and enjoy a festive afternoon tea. Super yummy and fun!


The castle is also famous for its equestrian events, with the annual Belvoir Horse Trials being a major attraction. The event is held in the castle's extensive grounds and draws visitors from all over the world to watch top riders and horses compete in various disciplines, including show jumping, dressage, and cross-country.
