Beaconwood and the Winsel is a perfect place for a family nature walk, whatever the season, as there is always something to see, including over 11 hectares of beautiful bluebells every spring!
Follow a forester's track through beech and oak trees, with an understory of holly, with a greater variety of trees to spot the further you go, such as sweet chestnuts, conifers, and cherry trees. A great chance to teach the kids how to recognise different types of tree, and to admire the majestic Great Oak, which is about 250 years old!
The dense bracken and leafy canopies provide cover for a great range of wildlife, so little birdwatchers may want to bring their binoculars to better spot buzzards, kestrels, great spotted woodpeckers, little and tawny owls, plus a number of other woodland birds. If you are lucky, you may even see a red fox!
You are welcome to bring the family pooch with you on this wonderful woodland walk, but they must be kept on the lead, and as usual, be cleaned up after.
