Attraction Information
Avebury Stone Circle, a World Heritage site set in the pretty village of Avebury, and the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world! It was excavated by millionaire archaeologist Alexander Keiller, in the 1930s, and there is a museum there bearing his name.
The museum is divided into 2 parts, the Stables, which display archaeological treasures from across the site, and the Barn, which is a 17th century threshing barn containing interactive displays and children's activities (including dressing up a Bronze Age children!), that will help them discover the story of this ancient landscape! The museum provides a great insight into the world of the people who built the stone circle and other local monuments. You can also see animal skeletons that are about 5,500 years old!
The prehistoric site of the stone circle itself is also fascinating, and when you wander among the stones of the inner circles and the massive outer stone circle, you will really appreciate the enormity of the ditch and bank of Avebury Henge! Avebury Manor and Gardens is also nearby and definitely worth a look.
