Attraction Information
Thwaite Watermill, nestled on an island with beautiful riverside surroundings, is one the last remaining examples of a water powered mill in Britain! A great chance to explore a unique piece of the industrial heritage of Yorkshire, and then take advantage of the lovely paths and waterside picnic areas to really make a day of it with the kids!
Step back in time when you enter Thwaite House, a fine Georgian Grade II listed building that was always the mill managers' house. It has been restored to its former glory now, and has exhibitions and displays that show what it was like living on the island and working in the mill without modern appliances, or even electricity!
You can also visit the engineer's workshop, where you can see the equipment that was used to repair the machinery and wheels on site. You can experience the wheels in motion on a tour of the museum, although they are still prone to the odd flood or 2, so check ahead if you are planning to visit in the rainy season.
Everyone will love visiting this eco friendly working watermill with its creaking waterwheels, surrounded by lush fields and woodlands that are perfect for birds, bumblebees and butterflies. Ideal for a mini beast safari or a mini family hike, so wear sensible shoes and keep your options open to extend your day out!
