National Trust - Hughenden
High Wycombe, BuckinghamshireAbout National Trust - Hughenden
Set in an unspoiled Chiltern Valley, Hughenden is full of fun things to do from woodland walks and picturesque walking trails to a world of wonder behind the manor's doors... With spectacular ancient woodlands and views of rolling hills, Hughenden offers the perfect getaway for families just outside of London.
And in the sunnier months? Little ones can dress up and perform in the mini-theatre, listen to storytellers, play garden games like skittles and giant dominos and go on rambles and den-building sessions with the rangers...
Things to do
Even historically, Hughenden offered an idyllic escape from everyday life and was enjoyed by Victorian Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli, and his wife Mary Anne! And just like the Prime Minister, you and your little ones will love exploring winding pathways in the Walled Garden and formal Italianate-style gardens while you soak up the sunshine and fresh air.
Play hide and seek behind ancient trees... The parkland offers beech, oak, and chestnut trees! Keep your eyes peeled for majestic wildlife like soaring kites and pass by adorable cows as you venture around the countryside. There are over 600 acres of woodland and farmland in total!
There are many things to see and do at Hughenden. Look out for the Hughenden Parish Church, you'll find Disraeli's grave there! Let your children run free on the Natural Play Area. Climb ropes, dodge fallen logs, and leap from stepping stones. There is so much imaginative play to be had here!
So now we've covered the outside, what's on in the inside, we hear you ask? The much-loved manor house has been the backdrop for political dramas but more significantly, it was used as a base for a top-secret map-making operation in the Second World War! Visit the engaging interactive exhibition in the west wing to find out more.
The house has been recreated to the tastes of previous Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli and his wife Mary Anne. You'll discover all kinds of fascinating rooms ranging from Disraeli's favourite books, his black silk robe, and royal gifts from Queen Victoria. There are so many other wonderful rooms overflowing with fascinating artworks and history in this historic house. Make sure to explore the drawing room, the library, Garden Hall, and the Hillside rooms!
Hughenden has lots of charming events throughout the year too, like seasonal trails in school holidays and many more activity trails.
Got a furry friend? Bring them along to Hughenden for a lovely walk in the countryside. Dogs on leads and under close control are allowed in the formal gardens, the orchard, the parkland and at the Stableyard Café. Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the house.
Summer Fun At Hughenden
Have a fun-packed summer of play planned at Hughenden this summer holidays! Hughenden has made it their mission to create a wide variety of activities that are creative, active, nature-inspired or something else entirely...
Kids can compete in garden games and croquet on the lawn, or dress up in costumes on the performance stage! There will also be pop-up crafting workshops which are perfect for any mini artists you may have blooming in the family!
There’s also a natural play area next to the orchard for running and climbing, and acres of Chilterns woodland in which to build dens or make a mini manor for wildlife.
The café has lunchboxes for hungry kids or bring a picnic to much under the apple trees in the orchard.
Food & Drink
Taking a break from your historical quest? The Stableyard café will have everything you need to rest and refuel from hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and sausage rolls and homemade cakes. You can eat in or takeaway, whatever suits you best! Lunchboxes are available for your little ones too.
