Air Raid Shelters Stockport, gives you and the kids the opportunity to come and experience life as it was during a 'black out' in wartime Britain, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the home front.
Explore this labyrinth of tunnels that provided shelter for many during the dark days of war torn Britain, with an audio self-guided tour providing details along the way. Opened in 1939, the shelters were the largest purpose built civilian air raid shelters in the country designed to provide shelter for up to 6,500 people.
In 1996 shelters as a visitor attraction by Stockport Council, and the unique award winning museum is one of Stockport's best loved attractions. Carved into the natural sandstone cliffs, this intriguing network of underground tunnels offers visitors an unparalleled insight into life in wartime Britain.
New facilities available include a state of the art audio guide, a new reception area and themed shop, plus the chance to discover stories of local people who shared the wartime experience.
