There are 11 acres of historic public gardens to explore dating back to the Middle Ages, in which you can find medieval ruins, a Norman archway and the 200 year old Oriental Plane, plus Burma Star Association and Itay Star Association war memorials.
It also winds alongside the River Stour so there are pleasing waterside walks too, where one can often see moorhens, ducks and swans.
The Toddler Cove kiddies' play area provides some play structures and equipment for under 7s, but this is one to watch for next summer as they use their recent Lottery funding to join Westgate Gardens, Tannery Field, Toddlers' Cove and Bingley Island, with a new play park a leading point of the planning. It's unclear whether there will be any disruption to the existing play area during the changes so be sure to check it out if it's going to be the high point of their day.
There are several open air events held here seasonally throughout the year so it's well worth keeping an eye out for the Up and Comings if you're local. Those travelling slightly further should feel free to bring an epic picnic to make it worthwhile and enjoy the natural shade of the West Gate Tower.
In summer you can sometimes join a Bat Walk and explore the area at dusk: well worth doing with ones old enough to stay up. You can also pick up Family Trail sheets from the Canterbury Umbrella Centre for some extra fun.

It may be worth checking out Westgate Gardens's website to see if there are any special events or seasonal fun things to do that may be going on during the day.
We do strongly suggest you contact Westgate Gardens before you set off on your family day out, just to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices, as there is nothing worse than disappointed kids in the back of your car after a long journey.
Please be aware that the gardens close at dusk. Check signs on site.
