Attraction Information
The Old Royal Station can be found at Ballater, a picturesque Victorian village in the heart of Royal Deeside. Its rich history and royal connections are well known as it is the nearest town to Balmoral Castle, which explains the many ‘By Royal Appointment' signs that can bee seen on local shops and businesses! The recently restored 'Old Station' contains fascinating displays on the one hundred year history of royal use, and retains may of its charming Victorian features.
You can visit the unique, fully laid out royal waiting room that was built for Queen Victoria, and next to it is the Victorian horse carriage that would have taken members of the Royal family from Ballater train station to Balmoral Castle. You can also see a replica of the 15 tonne Queen Victoria Royal saloon railway carriage. The Royal carriage is an exact copy of the one that would have been used by Her Majesty Queen Victoria and her husband the Prince Consort Albert in 1896.
The railway carriage is all on one level, making it easy to access with wheelchairs and pushchairs. This mini museum really captures how the station would have been during its heyday, with plenty of memorabilia, plus some interesting displays.
