The Monkey Sanctuary

"what are we doing today?"

The Monkey Sanctuary has been offering a safe home for life to monkeys in need since 1964.

Much more than just monkeys, we offer a great day out for the whole family, and you can rest assured that 100% of all income from our visitors goes to support out charitable work protecting primates and habitats worldwide.

The Monkey Sanctuary cares for four different species of monkeys; all rescued from the UK and international primate pet trades.

Our visitors receive an intimate insight into a working sanctuary with keepers on hand all day to give informative talks on the centre's residents and the charity's wider work. The Sanctuary offers a great day out for all the family, with wildlife gardens, children's activity room, interactive displays, workshops, gift shop, cafe and picnic areas.

Your entrance fee entitles you to free re-entry for the following 12 months during the open season.

"i'm hungry"

Overlooking The Sanctuary grounds, the Tree Top Cafe serves a section of delicious vegetarian food. Menu options include pizzas made fresh to order, sandwiches and filled baguettes, homemade soup, veggie bangers and mash and homemade cakes. There is a separate ice cream parlour which sells Roskillys Cornish organic ice cream and a wheel-chair accessible seating area. Winner of the Vegetarian Society Award: Best Visitor Attraction for Vegetarians.

healthy food

Our cafe is vegetarian and can cater for those with specific dietary requirements. Please be sure to tell our staff what you need, and we will do our best to help!

"Can I have one of those?"

The Monkey Sanctuary Shop offers visitors a wide selection of giftware, clothing, toys and the opportunity to adopt our rescued monkeys. Not just concerned with quality, but in line with our organisations ethical stance, we source all our goods from ethical suppliers to offer you a choice of great items sourced from companies that operate Fair Trade, organic, recycled or other ethical means of production. Open during Sanctuary business hours (11.00am-4.30pm, Sun-Thur).

and baby come too...

We sell baby food at our cafe and have facilities to warm up food in both our cafe and shop.

"are we there yet?"

From Plymouth: take A38 to the Trerulefoot roundabout (near Tideford). Take first exit off roundabout (signposted Looe and Polperro). Follow road then take right turn (towards Looe and Polperro). Follow road through Hessenford and, at No Mans Land, take left turn and follow signs to Monkey Sanctuary. From Liskeard: take A38 towards Plymouth, follow signs to Looe (B3253). Take a left turn at Twinaways Farm (signposted Monkey Sanctuary). At the end of the single track lane, continue straight over crossroads. At Bindown, turn right onto the main road after the Post Office and immediately left through No Mans Land. Follow signs for the Monkey Sanctuary. From Looe: Leave Looe with river on your left. Take the right turn on the hill towards Torpoint and Plymouth. Pass church on left and Looe Bay and Tregoad campsites on right. At top of hill take right turn onto single track lane (signposted Monkey Sanctuary) and follow signs. Got Sat Nav? For those using Satellite Navigation (Sat Nav) to make their way to us, our postcode is PL13 1NZ. If your Sat Nav doesnt offer The Monkey Sanctuary as a destination, select Bay View Farm (our neighbours), and you will find our way to us. We are working on getting a consistent listing! Walking? Its a fairly bumpy walk along the coast path to the Sanctuary so please be aware if you are planning on reaching us by foot that it is not terrain for pushchairs, wheelchairs or anyone who isnt steady on their feet. Please note that, whilst it may appear on maps that there is access to The Monkey Sanctuary directly from the coast path, this is not the case and access is only via the main entrance. From Looe: Follow the coast path to Bay View Farm. Do not take the turn onto Bodigga Cliff, but carry on up the road ahead of you. This will bring you to our gate. From Seaton: From Seaton beach, walk up Looe Hill (the road that runs up the hill to the right when facing the sea, along the coast). Ignore the sign to the coast path on the left and continue along the road. Road forks left along single track lane. Follow this to our gate.

...got any top tips?

There's more to see on dry days as monkeys are not big fans of the rain!

We recommend that visitors with limited mobility call ahead to discuss needs and available discounts. There is no contact with the monkeys during your visit.
