Solway Aviation Museum

"what are we doing today?"

Solway Aviation Museum
Is a collection of aircraft, aviation artefacts and displays reflecting Britain's position as a former world leader in aircraft design and innovation at the dawn of the jet age.

See what a World War 2 air raid shelter was like as bombs dropped all around.

Hear the childhood memories of men and women who went to school during the war and see what is probably the largest collection of model WW2 aircraft in this country.

Climb aboard some of our aircraft collection and sit in the pilot's seat, take the controls and imagine what it's like to fly a real jet (Parents might like this too!). Older children, seven onwards, and parents can climb up in to the aircrew area and cockpit of the mighty Vulcan Bomber to see how we could have delivered a nuclear bomb during the Cold War.

More to see and do inside - an interactive touch screen terminal all about Britain's Space Rockets and Blue Streak and the chance to fly a WW2 Spitfire Fighter in a dogfight mission in our state of the art flight simulator (small extra charge when available).

Disabled Accessible (View but not access to Aircraft), wheelchair and electric buggy available.

"i'm hungry"

Small Tea Room, freshly made Tea and Coffee. Wrapped cakes and biscuits. Soft Drinks, crisps and some confectionery. Outside picnic benches available for visitors use with own food.

"Can I have one of those?"

Aircraft Toys and Models. Aviation Souvenirs, key rings, badges, cards, books and some replica items.

"i need a wee"

Ladies' and Gents' Toilets.

"are we there yet?"

From Carlisle and M6 To Solway Aviation Museum, from Junction 44 M6 follow signs to Carlisle Airport which is located on the A689 about 6 miles from Carlisle. From Newcastle Follow the A69, turn on to the A689 just after Brampton and follow the signs to Carlisle Airport.

...got any top tips?

Outside display area is partly grass so wear wellies if rain threatens or it's been wet. If it's cold wrap up well – it's always twice as cold and windy on an airfield! Warm and sunny day? Bring a picnic and have lunch outside while watching the aircraft flying in and out of the airport.
