Sandal Castle
About Sandal Castle
Sandal Castle stands in a commanding position overlooking the River Calder and Yorkshire countryside.
The motte and bailey castle has been extensively excavated, and finds can be seen in the Visitor Centre, which also contains displays about the history of the castle. You can also find out more at the nearby Wakefield Museum, which is located on Wood Street.
Remains of the 13th century stone castle and the fine motte and bailey can be seen on site. Visitors can walk around the site for free, exploring these romantic ruins that include steps into the moat, and you can also climb to the top of the motte, where you will be rewarded with superb views of the Calder Valley.
