Riverwatch Aquarium is a fantastic place to learn all about the different aquatic environments in the local area and the different creatures that can be found there.
Kids will love the variety of creatures in the 8 different aquariums, and it is free to visit! There are also free activity packs for kids that are available at reception and will help them learn about the different creatures that they will see.
The aquatic habitats include The Lough, which brackish waters full of a variety of fish and shellfish, such as oysters and crabs, and Rockpools, which are full of some amazing tiny creatures like anemones, limpets, and shrimp. Sea urchins, large whelk, and a number of starfish, including the spiny star and sunstar, can be found in the Deep Sea aquarium, which contains colder water.
There are also a number of freshwater habitats to discover, from ponds full of insects and amphibians, to lakes full of larger fish, including the predatory pike! Kids will also get the chance to find out about the fish and other aquatic life that can be found in rivers, streams and canals.
There are plenty of interpretative panels that are full of information, but please speak to a friendly member of staff if you or the kids have any questions.
