Attraction Information

Looking for both an educational and active day out? Penrhyn Castle is a huge 19th-century neo-Norman castle that straddles Snowdonia and the Menai Strait (North Wales coast). Uncover Neo-Norman stairways, Victorian Kitchens, a bed made for Queen Victoria herself, and the dark history attached to the house's fortune...

Easter at Penrhyn Castle

23rd March - 1st April

As daffodils and spring blossoms erupt across the garden, get ready to pop on your bunny ears and hop into hours of family fun as you join the Easter egg hunt at Penrhyn Castle!

From 23rd March to 1st April, local artists bring a ten-point nature trail to life with exciting activities, carved woodland creatures, and a larger-than-life willow frog who makes its home in the Bog Garden.

Find the musical instruments in the woods and make some music, join an Easter tea party in the Walled Garden, or go head-to-head in an egg and spoon race! Psst... see how many activities you can tick off before collecting your chocolate egg or a vegan and Free From chocolate egg!

There are also two play areas to explore! The natural woodland play area complete with balance beams can be found through a secret archway in the car park down by the Cwt Ogwen hide, and the Adventure Playground with climbing ropes can be found nestled amongst the trees in Rook Wood, near the Walled Garden!

Things To Do

Kids with an appetite for history will be amazed by this attraction. Beneath the dominating stone façade hides more than just its internal red-brick construction. Inside, you will find unique architecture, opulent interiors and fine art collections sitting alongside a history of sugar and slate fortunes. You'll learn about serious topics regarding social unrest and the longest-running industrial dispute in British history...

The National Trust home is crammed full of fascinating items like elaborate and beautiful carvings, plasterwork and mock-Norman furniture. There is an outstanding collection of artwork and the restored kitchens are a delight to visit with imaginative kids.

The stable block also houses Penrhyn Castle's industrial railway museum and a model railway museum. In the latter, you'll find diddy trains and in the former, a fantastic collection of historic industrial locomotives and you're allowed to climb up into an engine!

And if that's not enough, there's another 60 acres of garden to explore too, including parkland, an exotic tree and shrub collection and a Victorian walled garden! Make sure you go on a picnic trail while you're there.

From beautiful Venetian paintings to skin-pinching slate landscapes, and the opportunity to learn about challenging histories, there's lots to absorb at Penrhyn. Just expect the unexpected.

Food & Drink

Browsing Victorian kitchens, climbing trees and touring railway museums is thirsty work! If you need to put the pep back in your step after an eventful day of exploring head over to Penrhyn Castle's Castle and Stable Café!

You'll find a wide range of hot and cold drinks, soups, sandwiches and a large range of cakes and bakes all made by the resident baker. The café extends outside, so you can have an idyllic meal in the sunshine on the additional seating. You can't beat the courtyard and castle ground views!

Accessibility

- Two accessible toilets on site

- Level access terrain

- Baby changing facilities are available in the kitchen courtyard next to the female toilets, in the unisex toilets in the Barbican archway by the castle's main entrance and in the accessible toilet by the visitor centre.
