Oxwich Bay Beach
Oxwich Bay Beach
One of the Gower's most visually dramatic and popular beaches, this largely sandy beach is busiest at the town end near the slipway where boats are launched and it's definitely best to avoid this area when in the water.
It's quieter heading eastwards towards the dunes and rocks.
When the tide is out you can walk the two miles to the Three Cliffs Bay and see the impressive rock pyramids it's named after.
Oxwich Burrows, a national nature reserve, is in the marshes behind the dunes, and they have marvellous elevated walkways from which to view a wide variety of unusual birds and wildlife.
There are two castles in the bay: Oxwich Castle which is actually a mock fortified Tudor mansion is near to the town and open to visitors and the 12th century Pennard Castle on the cliff at the back of the beach, which is essentially a ruin.
Immediate facilities consist of toilets with disabled access and a shop.
Sailing, surfing, waterskiing and more occur here so it's fine to dive in but watch out for the others. Lifeguard cover is throughout July and August, and certain weekends. For sailing enquiries 01792 234502.
If you've had fun on your family day out to Oxwich Bay Beach, tell us about it your visit, so other people will know it's a great place to go as well.
