About Oxford Island
Oxford Island can be found on the shores of Lough Neagh, and has a great variety of habitats to explore, such as wildlife ponds, open water, meadows, and reed beds. There is also woodland and scrub, a wildlife garden, and grasslands. This great mix of natural and man made habitats provide a home to an amazing range of wildlife to enjoy, from mammals and birds, to plants and insects. Little birdwatchers will love the variety of birds to spot, which include kingfishers, swans, a number of ducks, moorhens and coots, buzzards and blue tits. Mammals to look out for are hedgehogs, rabbits, a variety of bats, squirrels, mice, badgers and foxes! There is a full list of all the different species that live on the island that is available to download for free. Everyone will enjoy the Wildlife garden, which is designed as an example of wildlife friendly gardening that you can all do at home. It also has coppiced willow in the shape of a dome, a living structure that will fascinate the kids. There is also a wattle and daub shelter, showing another practical use of willow. Not only is the island full of wildlife, there is a marina offering various activities, a Discovery centre, plus a museum to visit!
