Oxford Bus and Morris Motors Museums
Oxford Bus Museum and Morris Motors Museum
William Morris started the first bus service in the City using Daimler buses, one of which the Oxford Bus Museum has on show within its collection of approximately 40 vehicles.
Some of these buses you can go aboard and on the first Sunday of each month (Apr to Oct), most Bank Holidays and on special event days take a Free Bus Ride (see website).
Also, on site is the one and only Morris Motors Band Coach which the Oxford Bus Museum Trust has restored. Ongoing restoration projects can be viewed in the Workshop.
Morris Motors Museum is dedicated to William Morris (Lord Nuffield), the Morris Motors Car Company at Cowley and its employees. The only building to survive from the once famous Morris Motors factory at Cowley has been given a new lease of life, re-erected at the Oxford Bus Museum site to house this exhibition.
Real-life photographs and information from the people who worked there and the exhibits that complement them give visitors a taste of what life was like in this exciting era. On show are vehicles such as the Bullnose Morris, Morris Z Van, Mini, Nuffield Tractor and the Morris Minor, with the centre piece being a 1953 Morris Oxford MO.
Children’s play area and Play Bus, gift shop and cafe are also available. See website for special event days including Teddy Bear Day, Easter Chick Hunt and Santa’s Special Bus.
Oxford Bus and Morris Motors Museums’ Cafe serves a range of light refreshments including sandwiches, hot and cold snacks and cakes and non-alcoholic drinks. Oh, and, of course, Ice Cream!
Collectors’ models for all ages, toys, puzzles, books, cards, stationery products and souvenirs of your visit.
Toilets with disabled and wheelchair access. Baby changing facilities available.
Parents' own baby food can be heated via microwave or hot water.
Oxford Bus and Morris Motors Museums are adjacent to Hanborough Railway Station (Oxford & Worcester line). Travel times can be found on the First Great Western website www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk By car, the Museums can be found on the A4095, which links Bicester and Witney. From the M40, leave at junction 9 and follow the signs to Blenheim Palace until the roundabout on the outskirts of the village of Bladon. Drive through Bladon, and as the edge of Long Hanborough is reached, the Museum is signposted on the left. If approaching by way of the A40 or the A34, leave these roads on the northern outskirts of Oxford, and again follow the signs for Blenheim Palace until the same roundabout. Plenty of free parking. By bus there are services operated by Stagecoach to Long Hanborough on Wednesday and Saturday, but not on Sunday. Service 242 from Woodstock to Witney passes the Museum entrance, while service 11 from Oxford to Witney serves the centre of Long Hanborough, about 20 minutes’ walk away. The Stagecoach website www.stagecoachbus.com gives details.
Oxford Bus and Morris Motors Museums are indoor attractions so ideal to visit on those wet “don’t know what to do” days. Buggy/wheelchair friendly (except 1st floor in Morris Museum which is accessible by stairs). Plenty of free parking.
