Nunwell House and Gardens is the only private country house on the Isle of Wight that is open regularly to the public, and is a beautiful old house with an amazing history, set in 5 acres of lovely gardens.
The house is of great architectural and historic interest, and it has been a family home since 1522! It was here that Charles I was hosted by Sir John Oglander, on his last night of freedom and you can still see the Parlour Chamber in which they met.
It is an interesting patchwork of architecture from different eras, from the earliest, built in the 15th century, to the Victorian music room added in 1906!
There are a number of beautiful paneled rooms, full of antique furniture, plus exhibitions with information about the Aylmer family (who now own the home), and their military connections.
The gardens include a rose garden, a walled garden, a Long Walk, a lily pond, a woodland garden, and a fountain, which came from Crystal Palace. There are also 2 pleasant bay tree lined avenues, plus an arboretum of flowering fruit trees. There are some lovely spots for a picnic, with wonderful views to enjoy.

We do strongly suggest you contact Nunwell House and Gardens before you set off on your family day out, just to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices, as there is nothing worse than disappointed kids in the back of your car after a long journey.
