Attraction Information
Montacute House was built at the end of the 16th century and is considered to be one of the most beautiful Elizabethan houses in England. Whether the kids want to be inspired by the art and history inside, or just run and explore, this place is worth a visit!
The Long Gallery is the longest of its kind in England and has a number of Tudor and Elizabethan portraits displayed, which are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. There is a lot to see, including nine carved statues of warrior men, one of which is King Arthur, who keeps watch over the house. The kids can also ask one of the friendly guides why the front is the back and vice versa when it comes to the gardens, plus take a look at the wibbly wobbly English yew hedges!
The guided tour is free and gives you and the kids an excellent chance to learn about Tudor life, plus the history of the house and its owners through time, so if you're coming at it from an educational perspective for school agers there's certainly plenty of fascinating information on hand to fill out extra credit reports and whatnot!
