Midland Railway Centre
Whether you intend your visit to be an hour or two or you wish to stay for a full day, here at the Midland Railway Butterley, there are plenty of things to see and do.
It’s a day out for the whole family with model and miniature railways, playground, picnic areas, cafes and a country park as well as heritage steam and diesel locomotives operating and a host of other attractions.
Sometimes you can see special visitors, be it Thomas the Tank Engine, a vintage Steam or historic Diesel Loco.
Take a nostalgic trip on one of our heritage trains, immerse yourself in a heritage railway culture, explore our museums at Swanwick Junction, take a walk in our country park and much more.
The highlight of any visit to Midland Railway Butterley is the Museum at the Swanwick Junction Complex where you alight from your train for a full day out. Every visit is different, with some attractions open on certain days and locomotives and rolling stock being moved.
At the Midland Railway – Butterley there is food and refreshments available at both Butterley Station and the Swanwick Junction Complex as well as vending machines. There are plenty of places to picnic too. We also operate a wide range of train based catering services. These include afternoon teas (very popular mid-week with visiting groups), children's parties (for that special birthday treat), Sunday lunches and evening charters. In November and December we also offer Christmas Dinner specials with the evening Santa ‘Starlight’ trains and the lunchtime ‘Yuletider’ trains. Some of these services are available for individual or party bookings, whilst others are available with charter services only.
Please advise us of any special dietary requirements.
We sell a range of toys, keepsakes and mementos in our two souvenir shops.
Toilet facilities are available at Butterley Station and Swanwick Junction for disabled visitors together with baby changing facilities.
