"what are we doing today?"

Middleton Railway started in 1758, and is the oldest working railway in the world.

In the purpose built Engine House explore how locomotives and industrial railways have developed. Climb inside the cab of a steam locomotive, learn how the controls work. See the difference between steam and diesel locomotives.

Experience a ride on the train as miners would have done going to work some 50 years ago. The Railway is run entirely by volunteers who love to tell you how things work, just ask!

SPECIAL EVENTS are held on some weekends, please visit our website for details of times and prices. Prices may vary for special events. August Wednesdays - everybody travels at children's price £2:50.

Hot and cold drinks, crisps, chocolate bars etc. Cup-a-Soup and crackers. Sandwiches are usually available on Special Event days

...got any top tips?

Steam railways by there very nature are not clean. Please don't come in your best white coat and cream jeans. To enjoy things to the full come in your play clothes and stout shoes, open toe sandals are not good for climbing on locomotives. Roller blades and other wheeled footwear are not permitted for safety reasons. We welcome all dogs on a lead.
