Mid Norfolk Railway

"what are we doing today?"

The Mid Norfolk Railway is an 11 mile railway line which runs between the market towns of Dereham and Wymondham (near Norwich).

Run entirely by volunteers, the railway runs Heritage Railcar and Diesel services between March and October every year, and weekends in June, July and August run Steam trains.

Various special events for kids take place every year, including our Easter Bunny Specials, Spooky Halloween trains and of course our Santa Specials.

On our Railcars, you can sit behind the driver and watch how the train is being driven, and look at the line ahead, which kids love.

"i'm hungry"

Dereham station has a tea room open when the railway is running, selling hot and cold food, snacks and soft drinks. We aim to provide on train catering on most services.

"Can I have one of those?"

Our Gift shop sells various items at reasonable prices for both parents and kids, generally on a railway theme.

"i need a wee"

Toilets facilities are available at Dereham Station and on the trains. Disabled toilet is available at Dereham, but not on the train, with baby changing facilities.

and baby come too...

If you speak to a member of staff in the tea room, they will be happy to warm the milk for you.

"are we there yet?"

You can join the Mid-Norfolk Railway at Either Dereham or Wymondham Abbey. Dereham is just off the A47 road between Norwich and Swaffham. Follow signs for Dereham, then brown signs will take you to the car park. Regular bus services operate from Norwich, Peterborough & Kings Lynn to Dereham. Wymondham Abbey station has limited car parking facilities, so we recommend you park in the town and enjoy a nice walk through the Abbey to the station. Regular bus services operate from Norwich to Wymondham, and an hourly train service operates from Norwich, Thetford, Ely and Cambridge to Wymondham.

...got any top tips?

If it's a sunny day, bring a picnic or buy some food at Dereham and enjoy what Wymondham has to offer. Shopping for Mums - Friday is market day in both Wymondham and Dereham, and there are many shops to see in Dereham town centre, most open 7 days a week. Buggies can be brought on the trains, on Steam trains, they may need to be folded or kept in the Guards Van. Wymondham Abbey with its altar screen is well worth a visit, if open. Allow 20 minutes walking from Wymondham mainline station.
