At Matlock Bath Aquarium there is rather more than one would expect, with the 50 species rich aquarium itself accompanied by thermal carp pool, a rare Petrifying Well, Gemstone And Fossil display, vast collection of vintage chinaware and a regional history exhibition!
The Thermal Pool is fed by a warm spring and illuminated at night, containing plentiful common carp, mirror carp and koi.
Kids are more than welcome to feed the fish but naturally only with the approved food available on site.
Rather unexpectedly but terrific for the kids, it's also home to one of the largest public displays of Holograms in Europe! And they've recently kindly repositioned the entire lot to make them more easily visible to children. Thanks guys, holograms are cool!
It's worth noting that there are no bathroom facilities offered here whatsoever, you'd have to run the smalls to the riverside car park a little way across the village. However once you're there anyway there's a kids' playground along the same stretch of river, plus Derwent Gardens and Fountain further along. Lovely!
