Lewes Castle
Lewes, East SussexAbout Lewes Castle
Lewes Castle is great little Norman castle that is over a thousand years old, with a series of spiral staircases leading to the highest tower, which has seriously stunning views across Sussex from the top, a fantastic backdrop for a family photo.
The Barbican House just next door is home to the fascinating Museum of Sussex Archaeology and a little mini cinema, which tells the story of Lewes and the Castle from prehistoric through to medieval times. Highlights to look out for include animal skulls and tusks, Anglo Saxon clothing and jewellery, plus a human skeleton!
There are lots of dressing up clothes for kids to try on, trails to follow, plus quizzes and activity boxes available for families to get stuck into throughout the site. You can download some of the activities to bring with you on your visit if you check online beforehand, so have a look through their link. Fun activities include building a castle wall using a medieval crane or making an arrow slit, plus the chance to aim a crossbow!
They also run a wealth of various historical themed activities during the national school holidays so it's well worth keeping an eye out for those and bagging yourselves some extra fun for your funds!
