Lakeland Wildlife Oasis

"what are we doing today?"

Lakeland's Wildlife Discovery Centre is a unique and exciting blend of exotic wildlife and interactive 'hands on' displays, which take you through 3,000 million years of evolution and follow the development of life on Earth, from magic molecules to mischeivous monkeys.

Exhibits range from chameleons to computers, from fossils to fossas and include some of the world's most threatened species which are kept here as part of international breeding programmes.

Visitor Reviews

We went last Saturday with our 2 sons aged 9 and 12 years and our 3 year old daughter. The place was easy to find with free parking and the staff where very friendly, you pay at the gift shop where the gentlman at the counter asked if we'd been before, when we said we hadn't he showed us which door to go through and wished us a nice time.

There's a clear theme to the place, you start off in a small room that very basically explains cells, our 9 year old found it fascinating and even though our 3 year old didn't fully understand it she enjoyed pressing buttons on the interactive displays. Next was insects but it really starts to get good when you get to the Butterfly House where there are butterflies flying free and a collony of leaf cutter ants busily working along the ropes above your head.

The boys loved the reptile house with lots of different reptiles visitors get to handle at set times during the day and fruit bats flying free above your head. As it was easter we also got to hold some baby chicks and you can take a photo of your child (or partner) holding a python.

Outside there where more animals, some of them like marmoset monkeys are in cages but there are large birds and Mara wandering free, most stay away from the paths and visitors but we found one small Mara laying sunbathing next to the path enjoying the attention from passing visitors.
