Experience 400 years of rope-making that rigged mighty vessels
Today, Chatham is the only remaining Royal Navy Ropeyard from the original four still in operation. Alongside its associated buildings, it constitutes the finest integrated collection of 18th-century manufacturing structures in Britain.
The time-honoured craft of rope making continues daily, employing traditional techniques perfected over centuries. These skilled artisans are known as the Master Ropemakers.
When you visit The Ropery Gallery, you’ll embark on an atmospheric journey through the lives of ropemakers, both past and present. Step onto the iconic ropewalk and watch as ropemaking unfolds before your eyes. The exhibition features immersive films, interactive displays, and a vast array of objects from the Des and Liz Pawson Rope Collection, illustrating the significance of rope in British history.
During our 30-minute Ropery Experience, you’ll be transported back in time as you learn about the ancient art of rope making, its crucial role in supporting Chatham’s shipbuilding, and the reason our impressive double ropewalk stretches a quarter of a mile long. Visitors can even engage with our ropemaking machine and explore the stunning ropery buildings.
Additionally, experience live demonstrations by our Master Ropemakers, showcasing the craft that has enriched Chatham for over 400 years.
