About Havergate Island
Havergate Island
This small island in the River Ore is famous for its breeding avocets and terns, which can usually be seen during spring and summer. To help with this there are 5 hides and a viewing screen set up in key bird friendly areas. In autumn and winter, the island provides a haven for large numbers of ducks and wading birds which make a chilly trip on the boat all worth while. Havergate is also a great place to see brown hares at close range too!
Access is by boat only and the boat trip to the island helps you really feel you're getting away from it all. Pre-booking is essential, please contact the RSPB Minsmere nature reserve on 01728 648281. There's an off road Nature Trail 1.25 miles long (no good for wheels of any kind) that's worth wearing wells for, but if you prefer to be a bit more civilised about it you can arrange a guided tour, too. There are also regular photography days held here, taking advantage of the natural scenery.
Sat Nav Users: the post code is to get you close, please plan your journey independently and look out for signs too!
