Harris Museum & Art Gallery

"what are we doing today?"

The Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Preston, is a family-friendly museum with loads of hands-on activities to get stuck into at whatever time of day you visit.

Visit our museum because we know how to make history and art fun! After you´ve discovered the story of Preston and met our 10,000 year-old elk, check out our fun family activities.

That could be trying your hand at our drawing challenges in our Fine Art Gallery, taking part in our Ceramics & Glass Gallery trail or being a detective in one of our Scent Bottle tours. We’ve got a café with a special children’s menu – you can even get a lunchbox with secret puzzles and games inside. There’s a shop full of pocket-money toys and gifts too.

"i'm hungry"

The Harris Museum & Art Gallery has a popular café located on the ground floor. The café serves a selection of light lunches, snacks and drinks.

"i need a wee"

We have ground floor accessible toilets.

Baby changing facilities can be found in the 1st floor toilets. There are also portable steps for children to reach the sinks.

and baby come too...

I'm afraid we don’t offer bottle warming or sell baby food.

"are we there yet?"

The Harris Museum & Art Gallery is slap bang in the middle of Preston, on Market Square, in the same building as the main library. You can´t miss us. It´s a five-minute walk from the bus station and railway station.

In car: Follow M6 to Junction 31 and leave motorway following signs for Preston A59. You will travel uphill through woods. Please note speed camera at top of hill just after speed limit changes to 30mph! Carry straight on at the mini-roundabout and through several sets of traffic lights. Turn right when you reach a large T-junction opposite Sainsbury’s Homebase. Continue straight on following signs for the city centre/museum and art gallery. The entrance to the bus station car park is on your left, just past a major junction. If you miss this left turn, there is another one for the same car park a few hundred yards later on at the next set of traffic lights next to the Holiday Inn hotel. (Turn left at the lights and then second left up a steep ramp into the car park). If you get lost at any stage, follow signs for City Centre/Museum and then for Bus Station car park – almost all roads lead here! Car park is pay and display. Follow signs from car park to Guild Hall/CityCentre. Go down to the ground floor in the lift or by escalator. Then walk through the Guild Hall shopping arcade. At the exit to the arcade, next to the Tourist Information Centre, the back of the Harris is directly opposite you on the left hand side. There are entrances on either side of the front of the building.

There is disabled parking right outside, and the ramp into the building makes for easy access.

...got any top tips?

There’s loads to do so you might want to plan to stay for the day, or half a day and then visit one of the other museums in the city – or combine a visit with a trip to the shops.

Some of our programmed workshops are very popular and will need booking in advance – check the website before setting off. However, there’s always activities for families to do whatever time of day you arrive.

There is disabled parking right outside, and the ramp into the building makes for easy access.

Wheelchairs are available on request.

We have ground floor accessible toilets.

Guide dogs are welcome, and there’s an induction loop fitted in all the galleries.
