Attraction Information
Foxton Canal Museum, run by theFoxton Inclined Plane Trust, is a fully accredited museum that occupies the boiler house of the Victorian Boat Lift at Foxton Locks. A great way to discover the story of the Locks, Lift, and associated waterways, especially as accompanied children can visit the museum free of charge! A super-secret schooling trip if you've a mind to make it that way!
Foxton Lock is the largest flight of staircase locks on the English canal system, with 10 narrow locks in all, forming 2 ‘staircases' of 5 locks along the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal, 5km west of Market Harborough.
Visit the museum to learn all about the locks, including how they were built and how they work as well as some interesting facts and figures. You will see working models of the lift, a ‘play' boat, plus numerous other interactive displays that the kids will love to get to grips with. There is also a wealth of interesting objects to inspect, and some great photos of the original boat lift for those doing a more scholastic inspection!
The museum has regularly changing temporary exhibitions, and takes part in the Foxton Locks Festival every June, so well worth planning around the changes and bonus activities especially for repeat visits.
