Eyam Treasure Trail
The Eyam Treasure Trail was designed with children in mind.
It explores the historically significant Derbyshire village of Eyam which is known as ‘the plague village’. Here in 1666 the occupants of the village decided to isolate themselves from the rest of the world when the plague broke out within the village. This act of sacrifice left a legacy which you and your children can explore today. Eyam Treasure Trail ensures you see everything in the village, with opportunities to stop and explore further as you go. The Trail starts and finishes near the museum, so should you wish to find out more than you already have – you should be able to at the museum.
The Trail is also designed to make learning fun and engaging, with many of the clues on this treasure hunt requiring children to work out what the answer might be – stimulating their desire to learn. At the end, they will have a sense of achievement at having completed a worthwhile task of locating hidden ‘treasure’ (please note, there is no real treasure hidden, merely a fictitious location of treasure on a map).
One thing is for real though, children will have great fun, in the outdoors, exploring and seeking the correct answer to a puzzle, all the time learning about an important episode in our history. The village is a very pretty village too.
Eyam Treasure Trail route passes all the major refreshment places in Eyam (a couple of pubs and at least one tearoom). Numerous shops sell ice-creams and other refreshments. There are also ample places to have your own picnic too.
Public toilets are located near the car park and museum.
Eyam tearooms are happy to warm milk and will have a baby changing station on site.
Eyam Treasure Trail is located within the village of Eyam which is situated in the Hope Valley off the A623 Baslow to Chapel road (Sat Nav code S32 5QP). Bus route 65/66 from Buxton/Chesterfield.
Like most places in England, the weather in the Peak District can be unpredictable – so make sure you have appropriate clothing and footwear for variable weather conditions. The Trail is suitable for pushchairs although one section might require someone to help carry the pushchair across a short grassed area. One section of this Trail is unsuitable to wheelchair users. Unfortunately this will make completion of the Trail difficult for wheelchair users unless they are willing to bypass this section whilst others complete the clues on their behalf.
If you've had fun on your family day out to Eyam Treasure Trail, tell us about it your visit, so other people will know it's a great place to go as well.
