Attraction Information
Ely Cathedral is a magnificent building that offers a warm welcome to all its visitors, whether their interest is historical, religious, architectural, or even those who just want to explore this impressive building.
There is plenty to discover in this amazing place, built in 1082, including how a Saxon princess became a Saint and founder of Ely after running away from her husband, and how the cathedral became the only building in the UK to be recognised as one of the 7 Medieval Wonders of the World!
You can also learn about the astonishing collapse of the central tower and its replacement by the unique Octagon Tower, why Oliver Cromwell shut the cathedral for 11 years, and much more on the guided tours, which are included in the admission price and cover the ground floor.
There is so much to see and do, from the stunning 215 feet (65.5m) high West Tower, which dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, to the 19th century Labyrinth at the West Door. Look out for all the animals represented in woodcarvings, stone, and stained glass, and see how many you can spot! Speaking of stained glass, there is a museum dedicated to this inside the cathedral (the only one of its kind!), which offers an insight into the history and techniques of stained glass over 800 years!
Activities for kids include brass rubbing and an Activity Trail, with the chance to win a prize if they crack the code! The cathedral is surrounded by meadows and parkland, offering plenty of ideal spots to have a picnic or to just sit and enjoy the beautiful views.
