Dunster Forest and Estate
Dunster Forest is part of the Dunster estate on the edge of Exmoor National Park.
The forest is a great place to explore, with the chance to spot deer, see an Exmoor pony or see some of the farm animals on our working farms, it is perfect for wildlife spotting.
We are good at growing timber, and have managed to grow the tallest tree in England: a 60m tall douglas-fir. To enable people to get close to the tall trees, and to learn more about them we have built the Tall Trees Trail in and amongst them.
Waymarked walking and cycle trails, designed for different abilities, and starting either from Dunster or from our forest car park mean that you can see some of the best bits without getting lost; but for the more adventurous, we also have an orienteering trail to get you to explore the bits of the forest that people don't normally find!
With regular events, adventure play area, picnic areas, downloadable quizes and the chance to make your own fun, there is always something to do: whatever your age, whatever the weather.
Dunster Forest does not have a cafe, but you can bring your picnic and enjoy it at our picnic areas- please take your rubbish home with you!
There are no toilets in the forest, but they are available in Dunster, less than a mile from the forest car park.
For Nutcombe Bottom forest car park, from A39, follow directions for Dunster and Tiverton to the south (A396). Head through Dunster and after ¼ mile look for directions to Luxborough and Nutcombe Bottom on the left. (From A396 (south) look for sign on right 1 mile after Timberscombe). Follow road, taking right fork at Bonniton Cottage and car park is 200m on left.
The Dunster forest is open all year, whatever the weather, so you might need to bring your waterproofs and wellies. It can also get hot- especially if you are walking or cycling so you should also bring water and a picnic. We do not currently have toilets or cafe, but these are available in Dunster, which is close to the edge of the forest. The waymarked trails may not be suitable for buggies or wheelchairs, but the Tall Trees Trail is designed with these in mind and is an ideal place for people of any ability to enjoy our giant trees. Blue badge holders dedicated car park at start of Tall Trees Trail. Tall Trees Trail is designed for wheelchair users. Other forest trails may not be suitable for wheelchair users. Dedicated bays in Nutcombe Bottom Car Park.
