About D-Day Story Museum and Overlord Embroidery
Welcome, families, to The D-Day Story Museum in Portsmouth, a D-day museum unlike any other. Imagine stepping back into the pages of history with your loved ones, where stories of bravery and resilience come alive. This museum isn't just a place to see but to experience and learn together. Whether you're a history buff or a curious explorer, there's something here for everyone in the family to enjoy and appreciate.
Things To Do
Portsmouth's D-Day Museum is Britain's only museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944.
The Museum's centre-piece is the Overlord Embroidery. Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, it is a moving tribute to the efforts and sacrifices of the Allies in defeating Nazi Germany. The scenes depicted in the Embroidery's 34 panels are vividly described in a multi-language sound guide.
Within the Embroidery gallery is the audio-visual theatre, where archive film footage, music, wartime images and the words of those who lived through it combine to evoke the atmosphere of World War II.
The D-Day Story Museum isn’t just a museum; it's a vibrant, interactive time capsule. Here, the history of D-Day is presented through engaging exhibits that fascinate both young minds and adults.
- Interactive Exhibits: The museum brings history to life with hands-on exhibits. Children can touch, play, and engage with history, making it a fun learning experience.
- Authentic Artefacts: From genuine military equipment to personal letters from soldiers, the museum houses an array of artefacts that tell the real story of D-Day.
- Family Learning: Special programs and activities are tailored for families, ensuring that everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, finds something intriguing.
The interactive displays take you through a fascinating insight of the event, told in 4 parts. From the Landing Craft Tank 7074 and Preparation galleries to learn more about the operation. To D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and the Legacy Gallery and the 83-metre Overlord Embroidery. You'll discover personal stories, iconic objects, more about the pivotal event and even watch dramatic film clips of veterans talking and personal accounts of people who were there.
The impressive 83-metre-long embroidery was designed by Sandra Lawrence who looked at hundreds of wartime photos that she could portray. Did you know that more than 50 different materials were used?! Everything was also stitched by hand...it's a sight to see!
