Craigievar Castle

"what are we doing today?"

Craigievar's Great Tower has changed very little since it was first built by Master William Forbes in the early 17th century.

His family continued to live in the castle for the next 350 years and when a group of benefactors (including members of the family) bought the castle and presented it to The National Trust for Scotland in 1963, it came complete with the vast majority of the contents, collected and lovingly preserved over centuries by the family. First and foremost,

Craigievar was a home and it is the special family atmosphere that endears it to so many visitors and which the Trust has tried to preserve. Surrounding the castle are extensive parkland grounds, which will remain open to the public. There is also a waymarked walk – the first loop is easy walking through open woodland which seems to glow blue in early summer when the bluebells are in flower. The rest of the trail leads through woods, marsh and farmland with beautiful views of the castle and surrounding hills, although there are very steep sections.
