Corris Mine Explorers

"what are we doing today?"

Corris Mine Explorers
Provides a rare opportunity to explore the abandoned workings of an old Welsh Slate Mine with one of Wales' most experienced Mine Explorers.

The mine was first worked in 1836 and abandoned by the miners around 40 years ago.

Slate was once transported all over the world. More than 130 years of mining history is captured inside waiting to be discovered.

It feels as if the mine has just closed. Machinery, tools, even the candles and a packet of cigarettes are still in place as the miners left them.

Before the trip you will be kitted up and then taken into the dark, damp tunnels and underground workings in exclusive groups of no more than 10, by the experienced guide. There are 3 trips to choose from: 1 hour Taster (ages 9+), 2 hour Mine Discovery (ages 11+) and a 4 hour Mine Expedition (ages 13+).

"i'm hungry"

Corris Mine Explorers starts from the Corris Craft Centre where there is a café which serves tasty meals, snacks, cakes, ice creams and drinks. During the summer months there is also an ice cream hut. There is outdoor seating and picnic tables which overlook the small childrens' play area.

"Can I have one of those?"

The Shop sells a range of books, gifts, toys and souvenirs. Excellent books are available which detail the history of the local area including the slate mines.

"i need a wee"

There are baby changing facilities in the gents and ladies toilets. Disabled toilets are also available.

and baby come too...

The Corris Craft Centre Café offers a bottle warming facility and high chairs are available.

"are we there yet?"

Corris Mine Explorers starts from the Corris Craft Centre in Mid Wales on the main A487 road between Machynlleth and Dolgellau. Free car and coach parking. There are regular buses from Aberystwyth, Dolgellau and Machynlleth: Route X32 stops outside the Craft Centre and route 34 stops in the village of Corris. Sustrans Cycle Route 8 passes nearby.

...got any top tips?

During the Corris Mine Exploration you may get dirty and walk through ankle deep water so please wear wellies. These can be provided if necessary. Please also wrap up warm as the caverns have a cool year round temperature of around 8 degrees. Remember you have to be at least 9 to enjoy Corris Mine Explorers. Sorry Corris Mine Explorers is not accessible for wheelchair users. However, the Corris Craft Centre, where the exploration starts from, is very accessible and has 9 Craft Workshops and a Café. You can have a go at making your own crafts including pottery painting, candle dipping and mixing your own herbals.
