Attraction Information
Situated to the south of the picturesque, historic town of Clare, just two minutes' walk from the town centre, Clare Castle Country Park is a beautiful quiet area to relax, play, get close to nature and learn about Clare's fascinating history.
Whether you are interested in history, nature, or you and the kids just want to unwind, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. The park is unique in that the grounds of what was a Norman ‘motte and bailey' castle, contains the remains of a Victorian railway station, and there are colorful interactive displays within the former railway buildings. This 13th Century stone castle keep is set upon its 70ft high motte overlooking the town, has inner and outer baileys that are ideal areas for recreation and picnics.
The total landholding of the country park is 13.2 hectares, and there are plenty of open spaces for games, plus an adventure play area for the kids. There are significant areas of open water within the park, and the river Stour runs along its southern boundary. There are a number of footpaths traversing the site.
Clare Castle Country Park also runs a popular programme of entertaining and educational events throughout the year.
