About Chillingham Castle
A mere 20 minutes from the seaside, Chillingham Castle is open to the public from Easter and through October for exploration of their Gardens, Lakes and Parklands, plus tours of the Castle State Rooms, Dungeons and Torture Chamber!
Maybe you will spot one of the ghosts reportedly seen here over the years, named the Blue Boy, Lady Mary Berkeley and the Torturer! If that's your thing then you can actually take a ghost tour here at 20:00 by arrangement, which not only covers the spookier areas of the house but also out in the grounds so keep an eye out for bats! There's no age limit attached so it's presumably pretty mild but give the obvious considerations to taking sensitive kids to such things.
Having been King Edward 1st's 'base camp' for the 1298 defeat of William Wallace this is a historically significant site in many other ways too, so a great chance for kids to learn some history and an ideal chance to research extra credit reports!
Elsewhere on site you can visit the Chillingham Wild Cattle: the only surviving herd of purebreds in the world! They're actually so wild that they're a bit dangerous to approach, so you're provided with a professional warden to judge distances with you and keep you safe while you learn about them and get a good look! They're actually so unusual, they're rarer than giant pandas!
