Cheddar Caves and Gorge
Cheddar Caves & Gorge is an ideal day out destination for all the family.
Explore Gough's Cave with easy-to-use audioguides, which tell the story of the caves' formation and discovery. There is a specially recorded story for children too.
The Cheddar Man Museum illustrates how our ancestors used to survive in the caves and children thoroughly enjoy trying their skills at cave painting and talking to our hunter-gatherer re-enactor who demonstrates flint-knapping and fire-lighting in the encampment.
Cox's Cave is a beautiful little cave with mirror pools and colourful calcite formations. Follow the path down to the Crystal Quest to find yourself in our dark walk fantasy adventure and boldly join the eternal fight between good and evil. Meet Mordon Lord of Darkness and his evil dragon Thynngar in your quest to 'save the world'.
Climb the 274 steps to the top of the Gorge and the Lookout Tower for views of Somerset. Take a picnic on the Gorge walk through our Nature Reserve and the home of many rare species of flora and fauna.
The Gorge Tour Bus takes you on an open-top ride beneath the rocky pinnacles rising 450 feet towards the sky. Spot the goats below you and the Peregrine falcons above!
Explorers Cafe Bar serving light lunches, drinks, snacks and children's box meals. Take-away for hot snacks and ice cream.
Food and drink is locally sourced and freshly prepared.
Cheddar cheese, fudge, books, gemstones, various gifts for all ages.
Toilets and toilet for disabled.
J22 from M5 and follow signs to Cheddar Caves & Gorge (A38 and A371).

I recently took my 7 year old boy and 5 year old girl to the Caves at Cheddar Gorge. The weather was grotty but we had the BEST FUN we'd had in ages!
The Gorge is amazing to drive through (look out for the goats) and the caves are stunning!
It's incredibly well organized, ALL the staff were friendly, fun and helpful (including the car park attendants). You get an audio guide to take with you through the caves, one setting for the adults and another for the children. It's brilliantly done - fun and informative.
Even my 5 year old could use it and both me and the kids enjoyed it immensely. We had lunch at the Cave's cafe. The food was well presented, very fresh and tasty (as well as being reasonably priced), you get a good choice of healthy and indulgent dishes.
A trip up Jacob's Ladder is hard work on the legs but worth the effort to get to the viewing tower at the top. You can go for a walk around the top of the gorge if you wish but it was a bit too wet for us on the day we visited.
We spent a good 5 hours at Cheddar and there was still lots to do that we didn't, including the open top bus tour and museum. It's a lovely, unique place to visit.
The children and I had a vote and we all gave Cheddar Gorge 10 out of 10. Well done - we will be back! - Marion / Aug 08
