Cheddar Caves and Gorge
The biggest, most dramatic gorge in Britain, with cliffs rising to 450ft and two beautiful stalactite caverns. The 3 mile long gorge, created by successive Ice Age meltwaters, was first occupied by our ancestors (Homo britannicus) 40,000 years ago.
Today it's a famous tourist beauty spot, a premier site of British prehistory, a national Nature Reserve and an international centre for caving and rock climbing.
Costa Coffee (above Gough's Cave) for the perfect coffee in relaxing surroundings. Also serves a delicious range of hot and cold snacks.
Cave matured Cheddar cheese, fudge, books, gemstones and a wide range of quality gifts for all ages.

I recently took my 7 year old boy and 5 year old girl to the Caves at Cheddar Gorge. The weather was grotty but we had the BEST FUN we'd had in ages!
The Gorge is amazing to drive through (look out for the goats) and the caves are stunning!
It's incredibly well organized, ALL the staff were friendly, fun and helpful (including the car park attendants). You get an audio guide to take with you through the caves, one setting for the adults and another for the children. It's brilliantly done - fun and informative.
Even my 5 year old could use it and both me and the kids enjoyed it immensely. We had lunch at the Cave's cafe. The food was well presented, very fresh and tasty (as well as being reasonably priced), you get a good choice of healthy and indulgent dishes.
A trip up Jacob's Ladder is hard work on the legs but worth the effort to get to the viewing tower at the top. You can go for a walk around the top of the gorge if you wish but it was a bit too wet for us on the day we visited.
We spent a good 5 hours at Cheddar and there was still lots to do that we didn't, including the open top bus tour and museum. It's a lovely, unique place to visit.
The children and I had a vote and we all gave Cheddar Gorge 10 out of 10. Well done - we will be back! - Marion / Aug 08
