Carlisle Castle is still a sight to behold. William Rufus founded it in 1092. It's had a few famous guests in it's time, including Mary Queen of Scots who was imprisoned here.

We do strongly suggest you ring Carlisle Castle before you set off on your family day out, just to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices, there is nothing worse than disappointed kids in the back of your car after a long journey.
