Camera Obscura and World of Illusions has been entertaining and amusing visitors of all ages since 1853, offering fantastic views of Edinburgh, plus five fun filled floors of amazing optical experiences!
The Camera Obscura show offers a unique and amusing way to see the city and is a ‘must’ on any visit to Edinburgh with the kids.
You get the chance to see live moving images of Edinburgh projected onto a viewing table through a giant periscope, from inside a mysterious Victorian rooftop chamber! While you are watching the show, one of the friendly guides will entertain you with stories of the city, past and present.
If you want to see even more of the city, then head up to the rooftop, where there are powerful telescopes that allow you to see everything, and they are free to use! There are also a number of excellent hands on exhibits that allow you and the kids to explore the way we see the world. From the amazing illusions in the Magic gallery, to the captivating holograms in Light Fantastic, there are so many cool things to see and do, you won’t believe your eyes!
Other attractions include Edinburgh Vision, full of pictures old and new of the city, plus a chance to discover how artists use optical illusions, spot hidden images, and experience mind warping effects in the Fun, Games and Stairway exhibition. You can also learn about the history of everything you see and learn how they work. Fantastic!
