Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum
Bursledon Brickworks were built in 1897 and by the 1920s were producing up to 20 million bricks a year.
All the old machinery still exists and is working including the steam engine. You can see how bricks were made and have a go at making a brick yourself. There is an exhibition area that is especially for children showing the day in the life of a brick maker.
Open Days are held on Sundays monthly from April to November.
We share the site with a narrow gauge railway that can carry passengers and one that pulls trucks. There is a miniature railway which gives rides throughout the day. We also have traction engines on site that join us for most Open Days.
We have a big exhibition area upstairs where we have craft stalls or exhibitions and a courtyard for displays. The variety of activities on offer is very wide, ranging from birds of prey to model railways!
Bursledon Brickworks run a cafe on Open Days serving refreshments including scrummy homemade cakes Other food outlets are often available as well. On Thursdays there is a small cafe for drinks and snacks.
We try to be as accommodating as possible.
Toys, books, souvenirs.
WCs, Disabled WC and baby changing.
On Open Days the cafe can warm up baby food/milk for parents.
Bursledon Brickworks is situated just off the M27 Exit Junction 8 and take the A27 towards Fareham. Swanwick Lane is off to the left at the traffic lights just after you have crossed the River Hamble. The Brickworks entrance is at the top of the hill. Train stations within walking distance include Swanwick (just over a mile) and Bursledon (just under a mile) Buses from Southampton and Portsmouth use the A27 (approximately half a mile from the Brickworks)
This is an old industrial site and informal clothing works best! Sensible shoes aren’t really essential but will be more comfortable on the uneven surfaces. Buggies are fine on the ground floor. There is only staircase access at present to the first floor. Once upstairs buggies are fine. Dogs are welcome but on leads please. For some of our Open Days we dress up in costume, why not join us? Ground floor and outdoor area is accessible for wheelchairs. Floor surfaces are uneven in places. First floor accessible by stair lift only.
