Buckingham Old Gaol Museum

Located in the heart of historic market town of Buckingham, the iconic Old Gaol was built in 1748 in the style of a castle as a purpose-built prison, with later additions in 1839 by the famous local architect George Gilbert Scott.

It is one of the key visitor attractions of Buckingham with a museum, a tourist information centre, a gift shop, and a second hand bookstore.

Buckingham Old Gaol Museum tells the story of Buckingham and north Bucks rural life, including the Flora Thompson Collection (Lark Rise to Candleford author) and Buckinghamshire Military Trust exhibits. A number of the original cells form part of the museum visitor's experience.

Many special events are arranged during school holidays for children.

A wide range of cafes, restaurants and pubs are within 100 yards of Buckingham Old Gaol including a Subway and traditional Fish and Chips next door.

The Buckingham Old Gaol Museum gift shop stocks a wide variety of souvenirs and gifts relatying to the prison and the town The gift shop's range includes: Books, guides and postcards (and postage stamps), Buckingham and Old Gaol branded gifts (notepads, tea towels, mugs etc), Flora Thompson books, DVDs and related items, Buckingham honey, Teaching aids for schools on Victorian Buckingham and Roman Buckingham.

Buckingham Old Gaol is located in the centre of historic Buckingham. Convenient parking can be found in the 'Waitrose' Car Park off the High Street in 
Cornwalls Meadow. It is a short walk through Meadow Row to the Old Gaol. The museum is a two-minute walk from the town centre bus stop served by the regular Milton Keynes/Bletchley 32 route and Aylesbury/Winslow 60 route. A taxi rank is located outside the front door.

Visit the Buckingham Old Gaol website to check the dates for special children events and evening lectures. Wheelchair and pushchair access by lift to the covered exercise yard and ground floor of the museum. The first floor of the museum is only accessible by stairs.
