Attraction Information

You don’t need a time machine to time travel! Just head on over to Dudley Town to be transported back to the Industrial Revolution.

The Black Country Living Museum is your ticket back to the past! Discover the 26-acre open-air museum that transports you corner of the world frozen in time and see what life was like 300 years ago. Head to the Black Country during the boom of the Industrial Revolution and get to know the fascinating stories of the people who live there. Experience the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the Black Country as you wander around the original period shops, houses and industrial workshops.

Get ready to say 'Ow am ya?' to metalworkers, schoolteachers, pub landlords, miners and nurses.

Newcomen Steam Engine House

There’s plenty to see and experience too! Young engineers-to-be will be left in awe, as you step inside Newcomen Steam Engine House - a working replica of the world’s first steam engine. Then, walk into the shoes of a 19th-century coal miner, as you go on foot into an underground drift mine. Back above ground? Hop on a bus, or a tram and wander around the museum’s Canalside Village. The award-winning Black Country Living Museum buildings & exhibits have also been featured in the BBC hit series Peaky Blinders!

Historic Buildings & Experiences

There’s no better way for kids to learn about history than to experience it! Let your curious youngsters take part in an Edwardian school lesson at the schoolhouse, where they can learn about historic characters. Or maybe practise their timestables... They can also join the old-fashioned street games and enjoy rides on the old-time 1930s fairground.

Another charming feature of this famous Dudley West Midlands attraction is its 40 reconstructed buildings and authentic shops and sorts of stories about them! Enjoy a trip to the tailors, talk to costumed characters and see a movie at the vintage cinema. What about taking an hour-long trip down the iconic passageways on the Black Country on the Canal Boat Ride? Meet at the boat dock and have an enjoyable experience on a boat trip.

Check out the Victorian Village School where you'll meet the village teacher - be warned they're pretty strict... Walk along the Victorian village streets, and visit the 18th-century fish chip shop, a cake shop and Emile Doo's chemist shop. Various other Victorian public buildings hold an interesting history and should definitely be explored.

There's plenty to get stuck into at this industrial heritage site! Making it a fab family day out, whether it's during the school holidays or for a fun educational trip!

Food & Drink

Want to make your little ones really happy? Treat them to a little something at the Victorian sweet shop or Veal's Baker Shop before you leave! Or check out the fish and chip shop for traditional fish and chips. Will you have a pickled onion on top? If any of the above doesn't tickle your fancy you are more than welcome to bring a picnic too! Taste traditional cheese and onion cobs at The Bottle & Glass Inn. They serve Black Country Real Ale here too!
