Berkeley Castle

"what are we doing today?"

Berkeley Castle is England's oldest inhabited castle and most historic home.

Over 24 generations of Berkeley's have transformed a savage Norman fortress into a truly stately home full of treasures.

You can see the cannons facing out over the meadow, the massive stone keep with the Civil War breach made by Cromwell¯Â¿Â½s troops, the trip steps up to the keep to trip attackers, the cell where King Edward II was murdered, the deep dungeon where people were thrown in to die, Queen Elizabeth I¯Â¿Â½s bedspread, the Great Hall where the last Jester in England died (was he pushed? Did he fall?) and so much more! Come and learn about murder, intrigue and mysterious events at the castle. Events and activities for families and children are run throughout the year - check our website for details. Choose from arts & crafts, teddy bears picnic, storytelling, archery sessions and jester skills.

"i'm hungry"

Tea rooms in the castle

"Can I have one of those?"

All kinds of things from wooden swords, to books and postcards. A range of chocolates and nice things to eat, plus some things for mum and dad.

"i need a wee"

Toilets near the tea room and near the Picnic Area. We do not offer disabled toilets or baby changing facilities.

"are we there yet?"

Berkeley Castle - Just off the A38 midway between Bristol and Gloucester. 10 minutes from the M5 Junctions 13 or 14.

...got any top tips?

After visiting the Castle why not look at the Butterfly House and enjoy the many butterflies flying around you? You can watch them eat and sleep, but it gets quite hot in their house so be ready to take your coat off!
