Barafundle Bay
Stackpole, PembrokeshireAbout Barafundle Bay
This place regularly comes out top in best beach guides and has been voted in the top dozen beaches in the world! Perhaps it's the combination of remoteness (there is no car access) and the almost Mediterranean beauty of the turquoise waters, soft yellow sands and emerald tree lined shore that makes it so special.
It takes an effort to get there: you have to walk up a steep path from the 18th century Stackpole Quay to reach the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, follow that for about fifteen minutes then climb down a set of steep steps.
The sands shelve quickly making it a good swimming spot though there is no lifeguard cover, and when the tide is out you can explore the gullies and caves around the cliff edge.
Once you leave the car park in the quay there are NO facilities whatsoever, intentionally to retain the wild National Trust feel, so take the kids to the loo before you get too far from the car!
Contact details are for the National Trust office, so please do plan your journey independently.
