About Balmoral Castle

Set in the heart of Royal Deeside, Balmoral Castle and Estate is one of Scotland’s most iconic royal landmarks and a brilliant family day out in Aberdeenshire. Known as the Highland home of the Royal Family since 1852, Balmoral offers a memorable mix of history, nature and wide-open space, all surrounded by sweeping Highland scenery, woodland, gardens and views across the River Dee.

Families can enjoy a relaxed day exploring the grounds and gardens, taking in the estate’s peaceful walks, seasonal displays and beautiful countryside setting. During the main visitor season, general admission includes access to the Castle Ballroom, where visitors can step inside part of the castle and discover exhibitions connected to Balmoral’s royal history. It is a great way for children to experience a real royal residence without the visit feeling too formal or overwhelming.
