Clearwell Caves Ancient Iron Mines
Coleford, GloucestershireAbout Clearwell Caves Ancient Iron Mines
Clearwell Caves are a natural cave system that has been mined over the past 4,500 years to form some of Britain's most atmospheric and oldest underground mine workings, created by generations of Forest people who carved a living from mining iron ore. There are bonus activities during children's holidays too and special events around Halloween and Christmas to look forward to!
Adventurers of all ages will enjoy the 9 impressive caverns open to the public, with geological and mining displays throughout. Learn how things work at the Blacksmith workshop and see how art was made with ochre! All supported by an excellent shop and cafe plus a great children's adventure playground.
If you can get a group together then you can also book a Deep Level or Semi Deep Level guided exploration, where you'll not only explore further into the caves than everyone else but you'll do it through scrambling, squeezing and climbing through tunnels and access shafts. Filthy but fabulous fun for adventurous types and of course an experienced professional guide alongside and everything you need kitted up for you.
