Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and GwentAbout Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle is this 'slumbering giant' dominates the skyline over Caerphilly, wonderful for getting little imaginations going and so dramatically scenic it's been used for numerous filming shoots including the popular TV series Merlin!
It's surrounded by a series of moats and watery islands and was built by Gilbert ‘the Red' de Clare, an historic nobleman who also built the original Castell Coch, ‘Red Castle', located just on the other side of Caerphilly mountain. It's great educational stuff for those of school age studying fortresses and the like, but also just eminently explorable terrain for a trip out with curious kids!
It's an interesting combination of opulance and practicality with the concentric 'walls within walls' pattern matched in its graceful intricacy by luxurious rooms within those walls. However in terms of a modern attraction there are few provisions made to add additional entertainment so you may want to try and engage the kids in historical storytelling and imagination play as you go round, thereafter letting them run about in the ground and play knights and princesses!
There is both short and long stay pay and display car parks 200m from monument and there is dedicated disabled parking but there's also a train station less than a mile away and a bus stop right opposite so with kids young enough to enjoy the novelties of alternative travel you've got a couple of easy ways to add some adventure to the trip.
